Additional Lab 2 (Introduction to Amazon CloudFront)

In this lab you will create an amazon CloudFront distribution that will use a CloudFront domain name in the url to distribute a publicly accessible image file stored in an Amazon S3 bucket

In this qwiklab you will learn:

  • How to create a new Amazon CloudFront distribution
  • How to use your Amazon CloudFront Distribution to server an image file
  • Delete your amazon CloudFront distribution when it no longer required

Amazon CloudFront is a content delivery network (CDN) offered byAmazon Web Services. Content delivery networks provide a globally-distributed network of proxy servers which cache content, such as web videos or other bulky media, more locally to consumers, thus improving access speed for downloading the content.

Note: Pay only for what you use. There is no minimum fee. Region to region price varies. As part of the AWS Free Usage Tier, you can get started with Amazon CloudFront for free. Upon sign-up, new AWS customers receive 50 GB Data Transfer Out and 2,000,000 HTTP and HTTPS Requests each month for one year.

To Create a publicly accessible image file in an amazon S3 bucket, click on S3 and click on create Bucket.

enter a bucket name as “mytestbucket” but remember no upper case letters and the name should be unique. click on Create.

Click on your bucket you created.

Click on Upload, in the upload- select files and folders, click Add files. choose the file you want to upload click Next.

On the permissions dialog box make everything public.

Click on start Upload.

Once it is uploaded click on the file you uploaded and go to properties and copy the link and verify if you can access the content.

the below image shows the content i uploaded and i can access it when i paste the link. but remember this is not your URL you will use when you are ready to distribute your content.

To create an Amazon CloudFront Web Distribution Click on Services and then click on CloudFront to open the Amazon CloudFront.

Once you are the cloudfront console click on create distribution.

On the select delivery method for your content page, in the web section click get started to select web as the delivery method.

On the Next Page click in the Origin Domain Name box and select your Amazon S3 bucket that contains a publicly accessible image that you want to distribute.

Accept the default values for the rest of the parameters on the page and click on Create Distribution.

Note:The deployed time will be up to 15-20 minutes

Copy the domain name and that amazon cloudfront assigned to your distribution and replace the object name with the name of the file you uploaded in your amazon bucket.

The URL should be Something like this when you replace the above values.

To delete the distribution check the check box for your distribution and click on disable.

Click on Yes,Disable and click on close.

wait till the status changes to deployed and click on delete.

Click yes, delete to confirm and close it.

To delete the S3 bucket click on the bucket and click on Actions, select Delete and type the name of the bucket you want to delete and click on delete.
