Lab 5 (Introduction to Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2))

This lab will introduces to the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) using the AWS Management Console.

In this qwiklab you will learn:

  • How to Log into the Amazon Management Console
  • How to create an Amazon Linux instance from AMI (Amazon Machine Image.
  • How to loginto your Instance
  • How to find instance in the Amazon Management Console.

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) is a web service that provides re-sizable compute capacity in the cloud. It provides you with complete control of your Computing resources and lets you run on the Amazon Proven computing Environment. Why we use amazon EC2? Amazon EC2 reduces the time required to obtain and boot new server instance to minutes, allowing you to quickly scale capacity, both up and down, as your computing requirements change and it provides developers the tools to build failure resilient applications and isolate from common failure scenarios.

Note: Amazon EC2 is free to try. There are four ways to pay for amazon instances: On-Demand, Reserved Instances, Spot instances and dedicated hosts which will provide you with physical servers dedicated for your use. Pay only for the capacity that you actually use. If you are using a free tier up to a certain level you can use it free for an one year.

Now lets see how to create an instance. Click on services menu and click on EC2. Click on Launch Instance to create a new instance.

1

Find Amazon Linux AMI instance and click select.

2

select the instance type General purpose-t2.small. click Next: Configure instance details

3

Leave the default settings in Configure instance details and click Next:Add storage

4

Leave the default settings in the Add Storage. Click Next:Add Tags.

When you click on launch it will ask for you to create a key pair. Create it and click on Launch Instance. Download the key you will need it when you want to connect your

Note: Amazon EC2 uses public–key cryptography to encrypt and decrypt login information. Public–key cryptography uses a public key to encrypt a piece of data, such as a password, then the recipient uses the private key to decrypt the data. The public and private keys are known as a key pair.

9

When you launch the instance you can check the launch status if it running or not.

10

wait till your running and your status check column says 2/2 checks.

11

To connect to your amazon instance via SSH is easy. Download PuTTy and putty Generator to save you ppk file as a private key.

In the host name box, enter ec2-user@

12

In the category list, Expand SSH > Click on Auth > in the private key authentication box clikc on browse to the ppk file and double click it. and clikc on open.

13

click yes when propmted to allow a first connection to this remote SSH server.

Note: When you are using a key pair for the authentication you will not be prompted for a password.
