Lab 8 (Introduction to Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) (Windows))

This lab will introduces you to Amazon Relational Database Service using the AWS management Console.

In this qwiklab you will learn:

  • How to create an Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) instance
  • How to connect to the RDS instance with the client software

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) is a web service that makes it easier to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud. It provides cost-efficient, resizable capacity for an industry-standard relational database and manages common database administration tasks.

Why would you want a managed relational database service? Because Amazon RDS takes over many of the difficult or tedious management tasks of a relational database.

Note: Pricing Varies according to regions and it varies. If you are using a free tier up to a certain level you can use it free for an one year

To create a RDS instance click on Services menu and click on RDS

Click on Get Started now

Click the MySQL tab and then select button.

Under Dev/Test, Select the MySQL radio button and click on Next.

On the Specify the DB details set the following details
DB instance class : db.t1.micro
Multi-AZ Deployment : No (Note: This feature doesn’t come under the free tier)
Storage Type: General Purpose (SSD)
Allocated Storage:5
DB instance Identifier:RDSLab
Master Username: AWSMaster
Master Password: AWS12345
Confirm Password: AWS12345
Click on Next when these settings are configured properly.

On the configure Advance settings set the followings
Publically Accessible: No
VPC Security Group: Select the security Group you have created earlier
Database Name: RDSLab
Backup Retention Period: 0 Days

click on Launch DB instance

Wait till the DB instance to get created.

Go to services and click on VPC.

click on navigation pane and select Security Groups.

Select the security group you gave and click on Inbound Rules and click on EDIT. Add another rule
In the type click MySQL/Aurora(3306).
In the source type 0.0.0.0/0
click save.

To connect to the RDS instance with Client software> go to services and click on EC2 and from the navigation pane click on Instances.

From the bottom panel get the public DNS string which you will use to connect to the instance.

In your windows open start and type mstsc and paste the public DNS and click on options and give the username as administrator and click on connect.

Click yes to the security warning and wait till your RDP session starts.
